How to structure a long post

Updated today

Long writing is easier to read when readers can see its shape. A few simple blocks help them follow along, skim, and find their place again.

Break it up with headings

Headings split your post into sections and let readers skim. Type /head and pick a size, or choose one from the Paragraph dropdown at the bottom of the editor.

Use Heading 2 for main sections and Heading 3 for smaller parts inside them.
Keep heading levels in order. Do not jump from Heading 2 straight to Heading 4.
Your post's title is already the biggest heading, so you rarely need Heading 1 in the body.

Use lists for steps and ideas

Numbered list for steps that happen in order.
Bulleted list for ideas that do not need an order.
Check list for tasks or a to-do. Readers see a tick box next to each item.

Highlight a line with a quote

A Quote sets text apart in italics with a line beside it. Use it for a quote from someone else, or to pull out one line you want readers to remember.

Mark a change with a horizontal rule

A Horizontal rule draws a thin line across the page. Use it when you move to a new topic or a new scene, where a heading would feel too formal.

Tuck extra detail into a collapsible section

A Collapsible section (called Toggle list in the / menu) shows only a title until a reader clicks it to open. It is great for extra detail that not every reader needs, like notes, sources, a long example, or answers to common questions.

1.Type /toggle, or click + and choose Collapsible.
2.Type a title where it says "Toggle details".
3.Click the arrow to open it, then add your content inside.

A simple rule of thumb

If a reader would scroll more than a full screen without seeing a heading, image, or break, consider adding one.
